President, Dave Kuhl, started his career as a maintenance man while also operating a 200 acre farm. Dave soon earned his triple trade status of Industrial Millwright, Master Machinist and Certified Welder. Kuhl Machine Shop Ltd. humbly began in his garage in 1989.
This year KMS is celebrating it’s 20th Anniversary! What a journey it's been!
The KMS Story
- 1989 - KMS was incorporated with 1 employee (Dave Kuhl) in a 300 sq.ft building with 1 welder, 1 lathe and 1 mill.
- 1991 - Doubled the work worce.
- 1996 - Expanded to 5 employees, built and moved into a new 56’x 60’ building, added a shear, 250 ton brake and a 2nd lathe.
- 1999 - Added a new 40’x 70’ storage facility for plate and sheet material.
- 2000 - Added a new 60’x 80’ addition to the main shop; grew to 18 employees and added CNC Lathes and a CNC Plasma Cutter.
- 2001 - KMS facility totals 15,000 sq. ft. of workspace divided amongst the plate, machine and Weld shops and administration department.
- 2002/2003 – Recognized as one of Canada’s Top 100 Companies with 900% and 880% growth from 1997 respectively.
- 2003 - Certified ISO 9001:2000 (International Standards Organization).
- 2004 - installed CNC mill and 9 inch bore lathe. Both offer larger capacities and versatility to imporve quality and efficiency in our machine shop.
- 2005 - Installed a 3 Ton 40’ x 60’ overhead crane in the machine shop.
- 2006 - Installed a 3 Ton 60’ x 100” overhead crane in the welding and fabrication shop.
- 2008 - Upgraded to a large Alpha multi-tool turret programmable lathe to offer higher quality machining.
- 2008 – Maintains a fleet of 6 service vehicles including an International flatbed delivery truck plus welding and delivery trailers to accommodate on-site customers.

The addition of more space and upgraded equipment allowed KMS to evolve into a full service shop that provides dependable and experienced millwrighting, certified welding, precision machining, hydraulic cylinder build and repair, custom design, and engineering support right through the prototype process and into fabrication.
As President and CEO of KMS, Dave spends much of his time meeting with customers face to face for on-site quotations or recommendations. Dave’s conscientious effort to build lasting relationships with customers and his drive to achieve and expand the company are two key elements to KMS’ success.
Servicing Southwestern Ontario region, KMS has earned the role of Industry Leader by continually providing reliable services and supporting the Manufacturing, Agriculture, Nuclear/Energy, Natural Resources and Public Sectors. Such sectors include Automotive, Construction, Forestry, Fisheries, Mining and Marine industries. KMS maintains strict safety and quality standards. We focus on lean and continuous improvement including modern equipment to develop systems and procedures to fulfill your order on time, every time..
