Skilled Trades & Qualifications - Millwrighting

Traditionally, a Millwright begins learning the trade through an apprenticeship, where educational courses assist in their learning process. To gain the knowledge and experience required, a Millwright apprentice may hone their skills for many years prior to completing the required examination.

An experienced Millwright needs to be able to do it all, from using hand tools and shop equipment, to applying math, science, and metallurgy.

Thorough knowledge and understanding is required in:

  • Various kinds of equipment
  • Blueprints
  • Technical instructions
  • Gear boxes and pulleys
  • Electrical
  • Pump shaft alignments
  • Welding and Fabrication
  • Machining
  • Installing/assembling/disassembling/maintaining machinery, shafting, conveyors and etc.
  • Performing duties of a general labourer, pipefitter or carpenter
